Activity in the Shoalhaven cemeteries & crematorium is subject to Shoalhaven City Council's "Cemeteries, Crematorium and Memorial Gardens Policy" and "Funerary and Monument Masonry Services Policy".
When you need to arrange a burial in a cemetery you must be able to comply with the requirements of the policies, especially the "Funerary and Monument Masonry Services Policy". Please note the requirements to lodge certificates of currency for the insurances, including public liability insurance.
Requirements to schedule a burial in a cemetery are
- For a new ground burial, i.e. where there is no current Interment Right, we require ONE CLEAR working day's notice. For example, if the proposed day of the burial is Friday, the service will need to be booked with the Bereavement Services office by the previous Wednesday.
- For a burial under the provisions of an existing Interment Right (reserve), including the re-opening of existing graves, TWO CLEAR working day's notice are required. For example, if the proposed day of the burial is Friday, the service will need to be booked with the Bereavement Services office by the previous Tuesday.
IMPORTANT: Notice for the required service booking period does not commence until the Interment Right has been established.
Burial application forms can be downloaded from our website. You will need the respective "Application for Burial" form. If an additional Interment Right (reservation) is required, perhaps for the next of kin, please use the respective "Application for an Interment Right" form.
The completed, but not necessarily signed by the applicant, burial application forms must be lodged with the Bereavement Services office by 15:00 (3:00pm) on the working day before the service. The fully completed and signed form must be lodged with the Bereavement Services office by 9:00am on the day of the service.
Special Note About Opening Sizes: The available opening sizes for grave sites are cited on the Burial Application form. The opening sizes are determined by the equipment used in the cemeteries. Choose the one that best fits the size coffin you will be using. However, for burials inside monuments we will advise of the maximum available opening that will be available.
Removal of monuments
The removal of any construction or monument that might impede the burial is the responsibility of the estate (applicant) for the burial. For a list of monument masons please check the local Yellow Pages.
NB: failing to promptly remove monuments, slabs, obstructions etc as required may prevent the timely preparation of the site for burial.
Confirmation of Service bookings
When you make the initial booking with the Bereavement Services office the details will be read back to you. The Bereavement Services office may also email you an acknowledgement if your email address is available. However, notice for the required service booking period does not commence until the Interment Right has been established.
Once the Interment Right has been confirmed and the burial application has been received you will receive formal confirmation by email or fax. The confirmation will also include billing (quotation) details. Please read the confirmation and advise the Bereavement Services office immediately of errors and required corrections.
